Where it starts

This is what most people are sent.

It is accurate. It is also unreadable for the people it is about. Around one in six adults in England would find this page impossible.

Step 1. Give us the source: a policy, a letter, a report, a form.

What people actually need to know

Who has to pay for care
How we check what you can afford
What you will pay each week
How to tell us you disagree
notwithstanding the foregoing pending subsequent reassessment as prescribed by regulation quoting the reference number

Small print, cross references and legal padding drop away.

Step 2. Pull out the points that change what someone does next.

One point, rewritten

The authority shallWe will commence a financial assessmentlook at your money in the event that you satisfy the eligibility criteria.if you can get help from us.

We will look at your money.

We do this if you can get help from us.

Step 3. Short sentences. Everyday words. One idea at a time.

We will look at your money.
We do this if you can get help from us.
Real photos of real people

Step 4. Every sentence gets the picture that fits it, from the Photosymbols library.

Paying for your care

We will look at your money.
We do this if you can get help from us.
We will tell you what you pay each week.
You can tell us if you do not agree.
You can ask us any questions.

Now it is a Pack.

A cover, contents and pages, laid out the Easy Read way
Your logo, your colours, your wording
Edit any line later without starting again

Step 5. The rows become pages, and the pages become a Pack.

Web page

One link you can send, text that resizes, works on a phone.

PDF

Print it or attach it. Tagged so screen readers follow the order.

Audio

Every page read aloud, for people who would rather listen.

One Pack. Three ways to read it. Nobody left out.

Step 6. Share the same Pack in the form each person needs.

Same information.
Everybody included.

An animation, which does not play until you press the play button, showing how a complex document becomes an Easy Read Pack, in six steps: the source document arrives; the points that matter are pulled out; each point is rewritten in plain English; a photo is added beside every sentence; the rows are built into a Pack; and the Pack is shared as a web page, a PDF and audio. The end card links to a free EasyMaker trial, and to sharing this animation by email.
