How photo shoots work

We travel all over the UK to photograph people for the library. We don't expect you to come to us – we come to you. We book a venue near your location, set up a small studio, and spend the day taking photographs.

You don't need any experience. Our photographer Steve has been working with us for over a decade and knows how to help everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. We take breaks when you need them, and you're always in control.

The pictures we take are used in Easy Read information to help people understand important things – like health appointments, rights at work, or how to stay safe online.

What to expect

We come to you

We find a venue near you – often a community hall or meeting room – and bring all the equipment we need. You don't need to travel far or arrange anything complicated.

You get paid fairly

Everyone who takes part in a photo shoot gets paid for their time and their work. This is your contribution to the library, and we think it's right that you're compensated.

You give informed consent

Before any photos are taken, we explain clearly how the images will be used. You sign a consent form, and you can ask questions at any time.

It's relaxed and friendly

We take plenty of breaks, play music if you like, and make sure you're comfortable. There's no pressure. Most people tell us they have a great time.

Meet some of our actors

Here are some of the people who've appeared in the Photosymbols library. Their faces help thousands of people understand important information every day.
