Behind the Mask with DIY Theatre

I've been an admirer of DIY Theatre for years. We've crossed paths many times off and on, and every time we did, I'd come away saying we really need to do a shoot together. This year, we finally did.

DIY are a Salford-based theatre company of performers with learning disabilities, who have been making accessible and thought-provoking work for three decades. Recently, our photographer Steve spent a day with the Core Company, working through a shot list they'd built with us to reflect ideas like performance, props, masks, costume, scriptwriting and sensory theatre. The new images are coming to the library soon.

The Core Company are also part of our Newton Project — our ongoing research asking Easy Read users what actually works for them. Their input will help shape both EasyMaker and the developing Easy Read Standard, and where we take them next.

DIY have made a fantastic reel about the shoot, and written a piece on their site that's a great read, well worth a few minutes of your time.

Big thanks to everyone at DIY for the day, the conversations, and for telling the story so generously.
